Out and About at Ackergill Tower

Ackergill Tower is just three miles from the town of Wick which has its origins as a Viking settlement, its name coming from the Norse Vik meaning ‘bay’. It became a Royal Burgh in 1589, but enjoyed its greatest prosperity in the 1800s when it developed as a thriving herring port, becoming the busiest in Europe.

With a busy shopping centre, the Wick Heritage Museum, Wick Golf Club, the Pulteney Distillery, and the Castle of Mey, the former home of the Queen Mother, there is plenty to do and see nearby.

If fishing is your thing, Loch Killimster is just 10 minutes from the Castle. Stocked with fighting brown trout, our ghillie is always happy to help you cast and land your fish.  In addition, a traditional fishing bothie sits by the lake with a large barbecue inside. You'll be well fed and looked after by the talented chef and the team with a selection of grilled seafood and meats, accompanied by traditional music from the squeezebox.

Caithness itself offers an abundance of spectacular scenery to feast your eyes upon and to indulge a multitude of invigorating outdoor activities. Visit John O'Groats and take a trip to the Orkneys, go whale watching or take time out and watch the basking sea otters; a trip to Ackergill Tower gives endless opportunities to try something new.
