Tower bedrooms, 3rd floor
Nun's room
An extra large double room with a half tester bed and shower room cut into the rock face of the medieval fortress wall. Dramatic colouring in black, red and cream. Gothic stained glass windows may have made this a chapel at one time in the Castle’s ancient history. Now very different with glorious views of the estate and the Doocots.
Half tester bed: 183 cm x 190 cm (6’ x 6’3”).
Lady D's room
An extra large double room with original brass and iron and a canopy bed made especially for Lady Dunbar in 1880. Features a shower room in the fortress wall. A spacious and feminine room with views over the Doocots and towards the beach at Reiss. The old stables and coach house can be seen from the arched window.
Half tester bed: 153 cm x 193 cm (5’ x 6’4”).
Jessie Long's room
Jessie Long was originally Lady Louisa’s companion, coming to Ackergill the age of 14. Jessie sat every day doing her sewing at her window in this room and no one passing the Tower by the shore could escape her eagle eye. Jessie must have been formidable but the room is quite enchanting and rather feminine with a photo of Jessie herself. Tucked away in her drawers, are interesting newspaper cuttings. A delightful room with Queen size brass & iron bed and small single shower.
Large single bed: 122 cm x 183 cm (4’ x 6’)
Princess Royal room
A Large room with bathroom (bath and separate shower). Named after HMS Princess Royal, the ship of Kenneth Duff-Dunbar who was tragically killed in action in the First World War. His sea chest, pictures and many naval books make this a fascinating room to explore. A real seaman's room, where you have a bird's eye view of the whole bay.
2 single beds: 100cm x 2 m (3’3” x 6’6”) or linked to form large king size bed.
Tottie's room
A cosy double room with bathroom (and shower over the bath) overlooking the village of Ackergill, the obsolete lifeboat ramp and the warming colours at sunrise. Named after Tottie, Jessie Long’s faithful Pug Dog, who, judging by the many photographs taken of her, was very highly regarded. One photograph in particular that is framed on the wall are the words "No friends like the old more precious than gold".
2 single beds: 90 cm x 2 m (3’ x 6’6”) or linked to form large king size bed.
Poppy room
A warm and cosy double room with a shower. Demure yet colourful. Many poppy seed heads were discovered in the old housekeeper's pot store, hence the name. Aspect towards the village of Ackergill’s lifeboat and the southerly seascape.
2 single beds: 90 cm x 2 m (3’ x 6’6”) or linked to form large double bed (6’ x 6’6”).
